We are happy to offer for sale a beautiful 19th century 1/9 tintype photo of African American sitter. Unfortunately due to an unjust era in American History countless faces of good God fearing hard working men and women have been loss to time as many felt their likeness was not worthy of capturing on film.

We are delighted to have the image of this African American sitter live on forever in someone's collection of 19th century American tintypes. This item came from a sale of estate items from which many of the pieces were from Ohio. It may be possible this is by John Presley Ball, an free African American photographer in Cincinnati Ohio. This image features a handsome and dashing African American man in his best clothes staring directly at the viewer. You get a sense that this man is looking right into your soul as he gazes back while sitting for this image.

You want to know his name and where he is from. What he did for a living. While very possibly a servant or slave in this era, one gets the feeling, or perhaps hopes, that this man was a free man who found rare success for a free African American man in his time.

He sits as if a young entrepreneur or a man of means. Very rare for this time in American history.

It is often said that some families felt so highly of their African American servants, keepers and cooks that they often included them in photos with their families. And even more rarely, paid to have their picture taken by themselves. We like to think that these peoples' pictures were just as worthy to be taken as anyone and it's a gift to the future that we can look back in time and know they existed when we view them. Condition: In overall good condition for age. The oval glass over the tintype is cracked.

The tintype is not affected. Small losses to the case but hinge works and clasp works to close it just fine. Cased in a Littlefields & Parsons Co. Ask any additional questions if needed. Picture - 2 1/4" x 1 7/8". Case - 2 3/4" x 2 1/4".
