DETAILS: Original cabinet card photograph of an African American Medic stationed with the US Army Hospital Corp. He is wearing the 1890 army dress uniform. The two buttons on the collar are marksmanship awards. The vast majority of African Americans serving in the military during this time were tasked with unimportant menial labor jobs. Photographs of African Americans in the medical profession from this era, especially those in uniform, are exceptionally rare.
