Original tintype or ferrotype photo. Part of a historical civil war era collection. African American or Biracial woman in elegant dress.
Women in the Victorian era faced enormous pressure of racism and sexism. Colonialism created further tension for women to aspire to become the ideal, white English woman. This left those not fitting into the ideal to either try and pass as white or navigate brutal beliefs that constantly questioned their identity and belonging. This portrait is an excellent example of beauty and grace and enduring historical significance.
Measures standard 2.5 x 3.5 and is in excellent condition.
