Vintage 1970s MCM African American Black Child AFRO Kitsch Painting, ASHBROOK

This is a charming and wonderful Vintage 1970s MCM African American Black Child AFRO Kitsch Painting, created by Ashbrook Studios sometime in the early - mid 1970's. This piece would have been originally housed in a large frame and wired with lights on the inside, so that when it was plugged in, light would illuminate from the areas around the trim of the subject's pajamas, and behind the candle flame See Photo 24. Unfortunately, I acquired this artwork as-is, without the original frame or wired lighting still included. This artwork is a mix of screenprint and thick acrylic or resin paint on Masonite board, and depicts a young kneeling African American child, in the midst of a thoughtful and contemplative prayer, with a single tear running down his cheek.

He has a large and fantastic Afro hairstyle, and beside him is a small blue candle. Signed: "Ashbrook" at the lower left edge. Good - Fair overall condition for decades of age and storage, with some mild warping to the Masonite board, light scuffing, edge wear, speckles of paint loss, scratches and light soiling throughout please see photos carefully.

This is a particularly rare piece by Ashbrook Studios, and it may have been a one-off. Ashbrook Studios was founded in 1974 in Garden Grove, California and was reportedly out of business by the early 1980's. Acquired from an old estate collection in Los Angeles, California.
