Rare and terrific sculpture of a black man, 19th-early 20th century, painted plaster, the short-haired bust figure depicted in a shirt with open collar gazing slightly up and to his right, the overall dimensions approx. 8-1/2" tall by 3-7/8" wide by 3 deep, unsigned. Light surface wear, including scattered rubs and tiny losses to paint; otherwise fine, attractive condition, with appealing, untouched original patina.

A very striking and sympathetic portrayal unusual for the era. Found in southwestern New Hampshire. The south, midwest, and west. Please take this into account.
