Extremely RARE black/white compo. 1930 Topsy-Turvy TWO-sided LARGE boudoir doll

1930s vintage , labeled " Topsy-Turvy ", (black and white) double-sided Americana type, very large doll measuring, 19 long. Both sides have individual molded and painted hard composition heads with beautifully painted and detailed features including long eyelashes, side-glancing eyes (blue and black) and smiling mouths with white space to indicate teeth. They share a solidly constructed and hard stuffed body with the Caucasian lady having a few blond curls beneath her gold fabric head scarf which is tied at the top with an attached woven fruit basket. She also wears a beaded necklace and earrings. The black lady has a similar gold fabric tied scarf and wears an apron and bead earring.

Both dolls have padded busts and thick floppy, jointed arms with mitt-type hands with separate thumbs and wear individually fashioned and joined, layered and ruffled dresses with floral applique trim and floral print that can be flipped to cover the opposite doll (one pink, other blue). We have seen statements that this type of double-sided doll originated in the south when there were few ethnic dolls for black children and white slave owners only allowed them to play with white dolls!

Whatever their origin, this exceptional doll still retains several (fully intact) paper labels on one of her arms to attest to her manufacture. They are in generally good condition with no fading or stains, no tears and no odors as they are from a smoke free home. There are several chips in the paint on both dolls that were touched up long before we found her, as shown. There's also a lot of wear on the back of each matching headscarf which will need to be resewn or lined. A few more curls or hair tucked into each scarf will cover some of the paint chips.
