This listing is for a Very Early African American Rag Doll of the best kind. She was fashioned out of black stockinette, and stuffed with raw cotton. Her construction is primitive but effective.
She retains her original clothing which includes: The wonderful red printed wool cape with ties at the neck there is a few holes and a patch on the cape- which is quite expected. She wears a wonderful little cotton bonnet with a ruffle that frames that beautiful face. Her dress is made of printed early cotton fabric and is a simple design with a gathered hem. And over this she wears a very early apron. Note that the cape has'bled' onto the dress and that we have not laundered it.The imprint of the red onto the dress is part of the authenticating process- that she is fact all original. Under her garments she wears a slip and a pair of pantalettes. The doll's face is absolutely the most charming of embroidered faces I have ever encountered! But we estimate her to be 1880's or earlier.
