For sale is a scarce first edition of. The Afro-American Press and Its Editors. Garland Penn, published in Springfield, Massachusetts by Willey & Co. An important early work documenting the history of African American journalism in the nineteenth century, the book profiles pioneering Black newspapers, editors, publishers, and journalists throughout the United States. The volume is illustrated, including a portrait frontispiece of the author, and contains numerous biographical sketches of influential editors and newspaper proprietors active during the late nineteenth century. Condition: The original decorative cloth binding is present but heavily worn. Spine covering is detached/separated, with significant loss and fraying to the spine cloth. Text block remains largely intact but binding is weakened and slanted. Heavy moisture staining is present to the front and rear endpapers and extends into portions of the text block, most noticeably at the beginning of the volume.
Scattered foxing, toning, soiling, and age-related wear throughout. Contemporary bookseller label affixed to front pastedown.
