1923 African American woman Portrait. Scurlock Washington DC Photo Studio. This framed portrait is lovely piece of. Black Americana by the renowned Scurlock studio in Washington D. Whose work has been displayed in several museums most notable with an exabit in the Smithsonian.

Hand written note on the photo reads " Your devoted daughter". I believe the signature is "Maude" and dated "7-21-'23". The name "Walter" is written on the back. The "Scurlock Washington DC" logo is clearly visible under the portrait.

Please note the original glass for the frame is not available. Smithsonian Exhibit: The Scurlock Studio And Black Washington. Famous and distinguished Scurlock Studio, a black-owned and family-run business which for nearly a century documented African American life and culture in and around the nation's capital. Scurlock Studio was founded in the early 1900s by Addison Scurlock, and later operated by his sons, George and Robert, into the 1990s.

Scurlock's pictures captured black culture in its complexity and showed black people as they saw themselves. "The Scurlock Studio and Black Washington: Picturing the Promise, " an exhibition presented through this month by the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture.
