1930s Nut Head Doll'Old Black Joe' LOVELEIGH Novelty Americana Walnut Folk Art

Here is a Vintage 1930s Nut Head Doll, "Old Black Joe" handmade by Itura Rosalein Colley Leigh. This is an amazing example of Americana Folk Art and History.

Leigh would make these dolls based on her actual community in Granvtville Georgia. The dolls clothes were made from actual clothing scraps from her friends and neighbors. Each doll was OOAK, One of a Kind, each handmade and hand painted a little differently. This peice is by Ms. Leigh herself because she always handpainted the faces with red eyes. The later day versions where others also made them, they no longer used the red. "Joe" was Loveleigh's first doll she created to depict a cotton farmer. He stands at about 10. He carries a bag full of cotton with his hand wrapped around the top to keep it all inside. Each finger is carefully depicted. He has a cane showing he is probably older, worked hard all day in the fields, and needs a little help getting around. The details are really lovely but do show its age. He still is dressed nicely with matching patches on his knees and back of his pants, and a scarf around his neck.

He has a painted walnut head, hence the name nut head dolls. This doll says Loveleigh Novelties, Grantville, GA on the bottom of one foot.

On the other foot it says Pat Pending. This makes me wonder if this was one of her very first dolls because I have not seen any others say this. Condition- Overall good for its age being between 85-90 years old.

He can stand on his own. One suspender has come apart. It was already broken when I bought him but another peice fell off and is bagged in case you want to do something with it. It is vintage material for sure with little tiny fibers. He does have some light staining to his clothes but that could have been there from the original clothing scraps which makes it even more intriguing.
