24 Black Baby Doll Antique Vintage Composition Artist TUTU Inspired by Leo Moss

She is a 24 hand-made OOAK character art doll. I created this young girl by sculpting her head and hair with papier-mache giving her a gracefully aged antique look, black complexion, broad nose, pouting down-cast lips, antique brown glass eyes with 4 streaming tears, sculpted angled brows, highly stylized black curly hair with 5 sculpted bow ties and pierced ears with faux moonstone and gold earrings. Zuri is a beautiful expressive young girl that needs her mommy to pick her up and give her a big hug. She is sad about the world in which we live and wishes for the world to be a better place with more peace, love and kindness. Zuri's name is of Swahili origin and means "beautiful" she is a beautiful child inside and out.

Made with a rescued antique/vintage composition and cloth doll.... Giving it love, new life and saving the planet one doll at at time. Her body is in very nice condition dressed in a vintage cotton summer dress with a few age wear tears, under-slip and bloomers.

How my journey with Leo began.. Since the onset of the pandemic, I began my journey with papier mache and the art of Leo Moss.

I fell in love with his poignant story and his dolls. They are truly works of art and it is a great honor in owning several of them. I call this a gift of first-hand knowledge and as close as it gets to Leo Moss and his techniques. Holding his dolls I get to experience how his dolls really look and feel, his sculpting and coloring techniques and their wonderful expressions.

When our country "locked-down" I had to find a creative outlet to keep myself occupied so I channeled the sadness and difficulties of an ongoing pandemic into creating dolls. Toilet paper was the hottest commodity when the C-19 Pandemic hit, I used mine to make dolls. We have all had to find our way through this difficult time. Studying and learning from my Moss dolls, I used similar types of materials and techniques creating this doll.

I have been an artist all of my life, earning a cosmetology license in my 20's and with this experience I learned hair textures and coloring, which I believe has helped me greatly in creating my dolls. The story of my pandemic art dolls was recently published in 2 doll magazines, Antique Doll Collector, Nov/Dec 2021 issue and Doll Advertiser, April 2022.

I wanted to share my journey, preserve the history of my art dolls and Leo Moss. It's important to connect with the artist and understand their raw emotions as they create their work. Tears are a powerful healer, releasing stress, sadness, anxiety and joy.

Our salty tears are cleansing like the ocean, lubricating our eyes, reducing stress hormones, and removing irritants. Pent up emotions can cause illness, fatigue and pain. Crying can simulate the production of endorphins, our bodies natural painkiller. Tears heal the heart and help us process loss, so go ahead, hug your doll and release those tears. In the late 1800's Leo Moss survived tragedy and began making magnificent dolls.

Now, nearly 150 years later our paths crossed and he has made a huge impact in my life. What you do now matters, it matters today, it will matter tomorrow.
