More than 1,000 black-owned and operated businesses are listed in the directory, which covers Oakland, Berkeley, Richmond, Alameda, and San Leandro. There are also multiple pages listing religious and social organizations. A form at the back of the booklet allowed business owners to be added to subsequent directories. In this example, a few businesses not listed have been handwritten in.
Advertising in the directory ranged from contractors and grocers to liquor stores, churches, and real estate brokers. According to news reports, this first-of-its-kind directory was sponsored by the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Club East Bay Club. The information in the directory was assembled by members of the club and issued in a loose-leaf directory that was a forerunner to this booklet.The publishers intended to issue updates twice yearly; however, no information could be found about subsequent publications.
