Description: Writing appears on both sides of this wooden hatchet. On one side the following is written: Made by an old slave of the W. The other side reads the following: Cedar hatchet from Mount Vernon 1896. I acquired this item at a Bucks County, PA estate sale. No additional information was available from the auctioneer.

However, I will say that multiple sales were held at the same address, brining in thousands of dollars (due in large part to a lifetime collection of pottery that was being auctioned). So, while I have nothing to prove provenance of this piece, I don't have a reason to doubt the writing. I don't know if this wooden hatchet was acquired by a faculty member, student, or other person during that trip or if the photo is totally unrelated to who first acquired the hatchet.
