DETAILS: Original cabinet card photograph of a young African American female cyclist along with her bicycle. A splendid full body photo along with the entire bicycle courtesy of Daniel Clark Studios of Indianapolis. The bike appears to be a woman's safety bicycle with a lowered top tube to accommodate for dresses that were fashionable for young ladies in the 1890s. During this time cycling was dominated by men with women often riding behind their male counterpart who took command and drove.
There were however a small group of young women beginning in the 1890's that broke this trend and cycled on their own. What makes this photograph unique is that this female cyclist is African American! It's rare to find a cycling photo from this era of African American cyclists and almost all of them are males. We have searched the last 30 years of sales data history and were only able to find two other examples of black female cyclist cabinet cards.
