This is a wonderful mid to late 1800s large photograph portrait of a wealthy African American Black woman, that dates to the Reconstruction Era. She is stoically posed, with a noble and beautiful expression and seated next to a very unusual table, with an Elk head motif. This woman was most likely a former slave of a Free Woman, based on the age of the portrait. Acquired during a trip down South several years ago. This portrait is in its original heavy wood & gesso frame, with much of the gesso missing.
This frame has a very shabby chic look and may not need any restoration, as it shows its age well. Some light soiling and discoloring visible are the edges, but this is to be expected from a portrait this old. Approximately 20 3/4 x 24 1/2 inches including frame. Actual portrait is approximately 16 x 20 inches. The item "Antique 1800s Large Portrait of Wealthy African American Black Woman" is in sale since Thursday, January 7, 2021.
