Original Antique 19th Century Engraving. Identified vignette portraits of first / early Black Southern politicians elected during the Reconstruction era after the Civil War and before Jim Crow. Blanche Kelso Bruce First elected Black Senator in Mississippi to serve a full term. Hiram Rhodes Revels First Black man in Mississippi to serve as U. Lynch First generation of African Americans from the South elected to the U. James Thomas Rapier of Alabama U. House of Representatives in 1872. In the 43rd Congress (1873--1875), Rapier was one of seven Black Representatives who fought for the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1875. Rainey of South Carolina First Black person to serve in the United States House of Representatives and the second to serve in the United States Congress. His service included time as presiding officer of the House of Representatives. Condition overall is very good+ with crisp details; three light unobtrusive horizontal creases 6" x 9.25".
