RARE 1939 Vintage SOUTHERN RECIPE RACIST COOK BOOK Dixie AFRICAN AMERICAN BLACK

THANKS for visiting my Sale Listing! WOODEN - FRONT AND BACK COVERS.

This wonderful RARE COOK book belonged to my grandmother. We are downsizing and have to sell many of our finest collectibles and family treasures.

The condition is as shown in my photos which are an integral part of my description. It is about as close to LIKE NEW as any 80+ year old cook book could possibly be.

There is a hand-written inscription on the inside cover as shown - "Happy Birthday - Mi Mi". There is some light yellowing - due to age - in the margins and around the outside edges. NO inside/outside inscriptions other than what is noted above.

It is in BEAUTIFUL condition - as I've shown in my photos. Inside Soft cover with real wood protective FRONT & BACK panels - as shown. There are no destructive markings or signs of abuse. It measures approximately 6 -1/4" by 9- 1/4" and it is complete with 48 pages.

This is an antique relic from yesteryear. WE - of course - DO NOT AGREE WITH any of THE RACIST CONTENT contained IN THIS BOOK.

NOR IS IT OUR INTENTION TO OFFEND ANYONE. THIS SALE IS STRICTLY FOR HISTORICAL PRESERVATION.

It contains about 322 "traditional" southern dishes. Many of these date back to the Civil War to the time the Southern Sates were known as the Confederate states of America, C. Traditionally, mammies couldn't rely on written recipes. So most of the wonderful recipes from these great cooks derive from tradition and experience. Many were not learned in the manner of reading and writing.

They created magic in their kitchens with whatever they could. It is adorned with numerous illustrations and songs sung by the plantation slaves of the Old South.

These songs are historically important as it was their attempt to preserve the Negro culture they had brought with them from Africa. Although the drawing were meant to celebrate the rich history of the Southern African-American when the book was published, today we would call these images stereotypical, politically incorrect, and even demeaning in some cases. Many of these make use of the "N" word which speaks volumes of the era in which this book was written. It is a relic of an era where racially inappropriate and insensitive products were widely available. Thankfully, society has moved past this era.

While it was a negative part of our progress, this cook book is a reminder of that place in history and serves as an important tool for education about the past. Just a few of the wonderful recipes included are: Pigs in Blankets, Buttermilk. Muffins, Confederate Coffee Cake, Pendennis Turtle Soup, North Carolina Syllabub, Corn Meal Mush, Hopping John, Creole Goulash, Pot Likker, Corn Meal Dodgers, Opossum, Cracklin Bread, Pickaninny Donuts, Plantation Soup, Kentucky Burgoo, Jambalaya (a Creole Dish), Chitterlings, Mississippi Cole Slaw, Miss Lee's Southern Corn Bread, Spoon Bread, Mulatto Bread, Beaten Biscuits, Chess Pie, New Orleans Crepes, Molasses Pudding, Fruit Cake, Confederate Coffee Cake, Short'nin' Bread, Topsy's Nut Drop Cookies, Colonial Cookies, Chocolate Indians, Florida Pralines, and Goober Brittle. Published in 1939, this cookbook is in Beautiful - NEAR FINE CONDITION - for any age and especially to be 83 YEARS OLD!!!
