Vintage First Edition ORIGINAL 1967 Black Francie Doll MINT
Vintage First Edition ORIGINAL 1967 Black Francie Doll - MINT! This is the real deal! She has been mine for 55 years and never played with! This doll is very rare with her light brown eyes, medium brown long hair, black eyebrows, beautiful black "real"eyelashes and pink lips. Her hair was combed one time - the day I took the string out. Her hair is long and below the shoulder with bangs and a center part. This first edition black Francie doll has lighter brown eyes and a lighter skin tone (compared to the 2nd edition). She comes with a twist & turn body and bendable legs. No tears, no stains, no repairs. She wears a one piece swimsuit that looks like a three piece. It is a multicolored blue and dark pink bikini with a sheer white nylon over shirt. It looks brand new - has both back buttons with the original button loops. Her right butt cheek has "1968 Mattel".

The only'flaw' is two very small white dots on the back of her upper thigh. Seems to have something to do with the bendable leg part. I do not have the eyelash brush. This was the first African American doll that Barbie/Mattel made. When it was released in 1967 it was known as "colored" Barbie by collectors.

This was a very common racial description used in the 1960s. When Mattel released her, they used the original Francie body and Francie face and Francie hair. This did not sit well with collectors of African-American dolls, because she did not look like an African-American. Also, the other white Francies that were released in 1967 were known as Barbie's MODern cousins. But colored Francie did not have that description listed on her box when she hit the store shelves I so wish I had kept the box!

They did not make many of these dolls. This is a rare and special doll! To learn more about this doll's history, go to virtualblackdollmuseum.
